Macro-Friendly Dirt Cake Recipe

Updated: Jun 21, 2019

I don’t care who you are, where you’re from or what you did (as long as you love me): If you were born in the 70s, 80s or 90s, you had some dirt cake in your life. It was my favorite garbage pail-kid dessert growing up, even though everyone knew it was probably the least healthy dessert you could have chosen. It’s the five-year-old’s dream: Crushed Oreos mixed with butter for the crust, topped with Cool Whip, cream cheese, chocolate pudding, more crushed Oreos, and if your mom knew what’s up, gummy worms to top it all off. It’s heaven in a trash can, and part of growing up means reading that nutrition label. I don’t wanna grow up.

Having just had dirt cake over my birthday weekend, using my mom’s recipe, I couldn’t help but wonder if there would be a way to enjoy this while still keeping folks within their macros. Well, I’ve done it! By making a few simple changes, like:

  1. Reducing the amount of Oreos

  2. Swapping the stick of butter for 2tbsp of coconut oil

  3. Choosing fat-free Cool Whip and using a lite cream cheese

  4. Replacing 75% of the cream cheese with vanilla Greek yogurt

  5. Adding in 30g of vanilla protein powder

  6. Replacing the chocolate pudding with chocolate Greek yogurt & cocoa powder

I was able to make the dish that still tastes like the real deal, except this time, each serving has 14g of protein (instead of a whopping 2g), and cutting the fat and carbs by almost 40%, what we have here is a dessert that will keep you within your allotted daily macros and still hit that sweet spot. The best part is this recipe makes 10 servings, which should last YOU at least 2 days.

Here’s all you’ll need:

  1. 7×11 glass baking dish (chill in the fridge before making dirt cake)

  2. 1/3 package Oreos (12-13 cookies) (8 for the crust, 4-5 for the topping)

  3. 2tbsp coconut oil

  4. 4oz lite cream cheese

  5. 8oz Cool Whip Lite

  6. 10oz Oikos Triple Zero vanilla Greek yogurt

  7. 20oz Oikos Triple Zero chocolate Greek yogurt

  8. 30g vanilla whey protein powder

  9. 2tbsp cocoa baking powder

Here are the steps, which should take you less than 10 minutes to complete:

  1. Crush all  Oreos in a food processor, blender, or in a Ziploc bag, covered in a towel, with a rolling pin.

  2. Place 70-75% of the crushed Oreos in bowl, and mix in room temp coconut oil with your hands until all pieces of Oreo have made contact with the oil. Save the rest of the Oreos for the topping.

  3. Take chilled glass dish from fridge, and line the bottom with the Oreo-coconut oil mix.

  4. Mix the cream cheese with the vanilla yogurt until the consistency is smooth. Then, add the vanilla protein powder and mix thoroughly, then gently fold in the Cool Whip.

  5. Layer the cream cheese mixture onto on the Oreo crust in the pan.

  6. Mix the chocolate yogurt with 2tbsp thoroughly in a bowl.

  7. Layer the chocolate yogurt gently on top of the cream cheese mixture in the pan.

  8. Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos on top of the dirt cake and let chill in the fridge to firm up.

That’s it, folks! Your trashbag childhood dessert, now all grown up and ready to be devoured. I like to let it sit in the freezer for about 30mins before eating so it’s a little more firm, but if you can’t wait, eat it right out of the fridge. Try it out and let me know what you think!
